What is Wellness Coaching

Hi everyone, and welcome to my blog. I will be using this space to flesh out some of the strategies, hints and tips that appear across my site and social channels to help you as you embark on your personal wellness journey. It seems most sensible to begin with a deep dive into one of the questions I am asked most frequently: what is wellness coaching, and is it for me?

The first thing to say is that coaching is very much a collaborative process in which you work closely together with me, your coach, to help you move forward with whatever issues may be affecting your wellbeing and ability to flourish. When I first meet a new client, I will very often ask the question ‘What matters to you?’ For some people the answer here will be very specific, whilst for others it can either be a combination of many factors or an undefined sense that things can be improved. What matters is that we begin to move forward and make progress.

I am also often asked what the difference is between coaching and counselling. Counselling is an incredibly useful process which focuses on the past: how you came to be where you are today. Coaching is much more about living, and flourishing in the present, and stepping forward together. This can be achieved by setting some gentle and achievable goals, whether it is a challenge, a health benefit, or working towards an upcoming event; it is different for everyone.

Within coaching itself there are different specific dimensions, which can include, for example, grief coaching, menopause coaching, business coaching and many more. As a wellness coach I look at everyone, working on any aspect of your life. This can apply whether or not you are in the world of work, in fact, wellness coaching can be particularly useful for those, say, who have retired and are seeking to focus on new goals and challenges. Or possibly you have lost or changed jobs due to redundancy, and are trying to re-establish your professional identity.

A key benefit of having coaching is about keeping the balance in your life, whether that is a work-life balance, or, for example, finding a balance between self-care and family or social responsibilities. Whatever it is, coaching can help.

So, how does this actually work in practice? Don't worry, it is very easy to get started. Firstly, I offer a free initial consultation HERE. I then offer six sessions initially, which are spread out, typically one month apart. This is to enable small changes that we agree on to be implemented and take effect between sessions, and also to see if they are working and sustainable for you.

I hope that this post has been helpful in giving a brief insight into the theory and process of wellness coaching.
